Padraig Harrington shot his lowest round of the year - a six-under-par 65 - to take the halfway lead at the Transitions Championship in Florida. The former Open and USPGA champion fired seven birdies to lead Carl Petterson, Jim Furyk, Bubba Watson and Retief Goosen by one shot. The Irishman could have been further ahead but for a bogey at the sixth - his third-last hole.

Ian Poulter is in a fight to survive the halfway cut in his last Tour event before next month's Masters. England's World Match Play champion managed only a two-over-par 73 today in the first round of the Transitions Championship at Palm Harbor on Florida's west coast. That was eight shots adrift of Garrett Willis, who led by two midway through the day's play from fellow Americans Jeff Maggert and Jonathan Byrd and also defending champion Retief Goosen.

Meantime Greg Owen returns to the Tour in the Transitions Championship, starting on Thursday.

LAZY forwards were blamed for Coventry Blaze's 8-3 defeat at the hands of Nottingham on Saturday. Presented with the chance to stake a decisive claim for the league title, Blaze threw it away, despite taking the lead from a Greg Owen goal. Coventry had many good chances to score on back-up netminder Geoff Woolhouse but failed to act decisively in front of goal.

AN excellent opening round of four under par from Oliver Wilson left him just one shot off the lead in fourth place at last week's Honda Classic in Florida. But four dropped shots over the back nine in his second round cost him dear as Wilson slipped down the field with a three over 73. essive double bogies at the 14th and 15th ruined all his good work. A one-over-par 71 in his fourth round left him in a share of 17th place in his first tournament on the regular PGA Tour this year.

CARDIFF Devils produced a storming fightback against Elite League ice hockey leaders Coventry Blaze, but eventually allowed the points to slip away. Devils hit back from 3-0 down to level the scores at 3-3, but Blaze hit the game winner thanks to a Jonathan Weaver goal on 48 minutes six seconds. Referee Mike Hicks handed out 66 minutes in penalties against Devils – against 16 for Blaze.

COVENTRY Blaze's woes on the road continued last night with a 3-2 loss in Sheffield. Table-topping Blaze have now lost four on the bounce and face a crunch game against Cardiff at the Skydome tonight if they are to stop Belfast Giants closing in on them. Jason Robinson was missing in this encounter, while Greg Chambers was ejected and could miss tonight's game for abuse of official.
